Media element pseudo-classes

The :playing, :paused, :seeking, :buffering, :stalled, :muted, and :volume-locked CSS pseudo-classes match <audio> and <video> elements based on their state. This is one of the focus areas in Interop 2026.

this feature is documented on MDN

MDN: :playing CSS pseudo-class

MDN covers each pseudo-class with its own reference page — syntax, examples, specifications, and browser compatibility: :playing, :paused, :seeking, :buffering, :stalled, :muted, and :volume-locked. gendn doesn't duplicate that here.

Why gendn doesn't duplicate MDN: this site exists for Chrome features that have no MDN reference yet. When MDN covers a feature completely, this page points to its canonical reference and records dated listing context alongside the current ChromeStatus status — duplicated prose would only drift out of sync.

quick reference

The changeThe full set of media-state pseudo-classes for <audio>/<video> — :playing, :paused, :seeking, :buffering, :stalled, :muted, :volume-locked — is also documented at the earlier v150 reference route. Both routes cover the same feature, an Interop 2026 focus area.
Chrome statusThe 2026-07-28 review recorded this feature in the milestone-152 listing. The live feature record checked 2026-10-07 instead says “Proposed” and lists desktop, Android, and WebView milestone 158; the current milestone-152 listing omits it. The historical listing is not a present-tense shipping claim.
